Conversational systems, like ChatGPT, GPT-4, Claude, Llama, etc., have become a trending technology due to their ability to provide seamless, personalized, and engaging experiences to users. With the widespread use of messaging apps, voice assistants, APIs. web-based applications, and the great variety of available pre-trained LLM models, these systems are transforming the way we interact with technology and with each other. For instance, companies can quickly offer a natural way to communicate with their clients, users do not need to learn complex commands or interfaces to get tasks to be done, and the large variety of applications are basically transforming the marketplace and rules of games.

In this class, we will explore some of the current trends and open challenges for these systems. Throughout the class, we will explore some of the trends in research, learn how these systems work, as well as their strengths and limitations. Moreover, we will cover some of the main challenges including automatic evaluation and ethical aspects.

The talk will finish with some personal experiences and current research to show some of the efforts we are doing in Spain to also help in advancing and shaping the future of conversational systems.
