Lucio Tommaso De Paolis, Department of Engineering for Innovation, University of Salento, Italy.

eXtended Reality (XR) is an umbrella term representing Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR).

eXtended Reality is the technology that is making its way into education and learning. The introduction of XR in education can make lessons more engaging and information more understandable. Supporting textbook materials with XR examples adds another dimension to the learning process that will become a hybrid of the traditional approach and innovative hands-on illustrations. It can make the educational experience fun for young people and the ability to interact with 3D objects supports the paradigms of “learning by doing” and “learning by playing” that allow a deeper understanding and easier memorisation of concepts.

XR is also growing in terms of knowledge in cultural heritage; recently, several cultural institutions have started to adopt XR systems to provide a more interesting and educational experience for visitors. Thanks to its versatility, this technology is being exploited both in indoor environments, such as museums, galleries, archives, and in outdoor environments, especially public places with high historical, natural, and cultural value.

In medicine and surgery, XR make available new tools for the definition of the diagnosis by translating the information contained in medical images into a 3-dimensional virtual representation of the patient that is a realistic replica of living patient with the actual pathologies. The applications of AR technology provide systems that help surgeons in the intra-operative phase by means of the overlapping of virtual information on the real patient and permit to perform the tasks in ways that are both faster and safer. These applications provide surgeon with a sort of “X-ray vision” of the patient’s internal anatomy and have the potential to bring the advantages of the open-surgery visualization also in minimally invasive surgery.

The aim of this talk is to present the new applications of the eXtended Reality technology and discuss on the benefits and limitations.
